Miguel Covarrubias

He was born in Mexico City in 1904.  As a teenager he arrived in New York City with a wealth of talent and was soon drawing for magazines and designing for the stage.  Some likened his drawings to those of Al Hirschfeld.  He numbered among his friends and colleagues Edward Weston, Tina Modotti, Frida Kahlo,  Eugene O'Neill, W.C. Handy (being an aficionado of jazz) and Diego Rivera.  While starting out as an illustrator and indeed publishing his first books as such, over time he became very well known as a writer, starting with his look at Bali in  'Island of Bali.'  (At the moment we are out of stock on this title but I wouldn't be surprised if we got another copy in the near future!).

However, we have several noteworthy works by Covarrubias as both illustrator and author:
